Conditions are treacherous on Christchurch roads due to black ice and frozen snow.

The Christchurch City Council says extreme care is required on all roads and footpaths and says that ideally motorists should stay off the roads until mid-morning.

Most the roads that are currently closed are expected to be open by mid-morning. Dyers Pass road is still closed. Grit has been applied to the main roads, but the arterial roads are still covered in snow and ice.
