A senior adviser to Prince Charles has questioned whether short sighted decisions are adding to the devastation caused by the Canterbury earthquakes.

Hank Dittmar, chief executive of the Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment, reveals the concerns in a letter to Christchurch heritage campaigner Rodney Laredo.

Mr Dittmar is the prince's senior architecture and planning adviser."We share your concern that the devastation brought about by the earthquake will be further compounded by short-sighted decision-making over Christchurch's heritage," Mr Dittmar wrote.

The foundation has offered its help to the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority and Mr Dittmar said he would be following developments and the future of the cathedral with interest, The Press newspaper reported.

The prince is known for his strong and sometimes controversial views on architecture and heritage protection.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are to visit New Zealand in November as part of the Queen's diamond jubilee celebrations but it is not known if they will visit Christchurch.
