Christchurch City Council endorses pausing Cathedral demolition

 

Today the Council endorsed putting an immediate pause on the demolition of the Cathedral to enable deeper and more open consideration of restoration options.  The resolution was carried by 10 votes to four.

 

The Council also voted unanimously to write to the Bishop and the Anglican Diocese to advise them of the resolution with a copy given to Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownleeand the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority. 

 

A resolution that the Mayor seek a meeting between the Council and the Anglican Bishop and Cathedral Project to seek an open and thorough discussion across the community about the future design of the cathedral was carried by 11 votes to three.
