Police said there were no reports of damage
A magnitude 4 earthquake has been recorded in Canterbury in the early hours of the morning.
The earthquake occurred at 12:42am. It was located 10km northeast of Christchurch and had a focal depth of 12km, GNS Science said.
Police said there were no reports of damage.
The earthquake was felt in Christchurch, which is still recovering from a devastating magnitude 6.3 earthquake in February 2011 in which 185 people died.
On Monday, the Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission will begin a public hearing on the collapse of the Canterbury Television building, where 115 people died. Family members are expected to attend the hearing, which will last for eight weeks.
"The intention and purpose of the hearing will be to ascertain why the CTV building collapsed, causing such a significant loss of life," the commission says.
Family members have vowed to attend the start of the hearing at a church hall in Christchurch and are steeling themselves for an emotional and traumatic eight weeks, the New Zealand Heraldreported.
