Fletcher Building is on the hunt for 70 new employees in Canterbury and expects to increase its workforce by 200 in the coming year.

On Saturday, the building conglomerate will hold a job fair at Westpac Business and Community Hub in Addington to sign up people with skills ranging from truck drivers to sales co-ordinators as well as the trades.

Eleven Fletcher subsidiaries will be at the fair, including Fletcher EQR, its infrastructure division and Fletcher Aluminium, which last month opened a new $5 million Wigram window and door finishing plant.

Fletcher Building group human resources manager Kate Daly said the increasing construction work meant more employees were needed across the group.

"Right now our businesses are looking to employ people right across the board - from truck drivers to sales coordinators, forklift operators to structural engineers."

The group was holding a fair to make sure Cantabrians had the best chance to talk to company people, get the information they need and apply for vacancies or those that were imminent, she said.

"Employing locals is great for the community and our businesses also benefit from working with people who have a connection with the region."

Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend said the fair was a good way to gather the unprecedented people and skills needed for the city's rebuild.

"It makes good sense to harness local talent and this fair will provide an excellent opportunity to do just that. I'd encourage anybody seeking an active role in the reconstruction of our city to attend."

Fletcher EQR had many roles to fill, general manager David Peterson said.

As project manager for the Earthquake Commission (EQC), it employs 525 people and has inducted more than 13,000 contractors.

"We will continue to need qualified tradesmen but also have a number of technical and administration roles which we need to fill," he said.

People will be able to register to be considered for future jobs when they come available.

The fair will be from 10am till 3pm at the Westpac hub next to the CBS Canterbury Arena.
