Unusual aftershock hits Canterbury

Christchurch has been rattled by another aftershock this afternoon - from an unusual location.

Christchurch has been rattled by another aftershock this afternoon.

The 3.8 magnitude tremor struck shortly after 3:40, 35km from Akaroa at a depth of 19km.

Twitter user Kev Mair said: "It felt like my office was on the end of ruler being twanged”.

Gregor Ronald was on the 5th floor of the University of Canterbury Library and tweeted that most people in the library had felt it. However, he said he "didn't notice". 

More than 200 people registered a quake report with Geonet.
