First houses opened at Chch affordable housing development

The first completed houses at the Awatea housing development in Christchurch were opened this morning by Building and Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith, who welcomed today’s milestone as further progress in improving the supply and affordability of homes in the city.

“The Government’s priority for the post-earthquake housing market in Christchurch is increased supply with a particular focus on new, quality homes priced for people on modest incomes. The Awatea housing development will deliver a total of 238 homes once fully complete, with 40 per cent of those below $400,000,” Dr Smith says.

“I am delighted today to be opening the first completed homes in Stage One of the Awatea residential development, 22 of which will be priced between $350,000 and $390,000. The affordable price range is in line with the $450,000 house price cap for the Government’s HomeStart scheme, which provides grants of up to $20,000 for first home buyers,” Dr Smith says.

The Awatea project is one of three being advanced under the Christchurch Housing Accord agreed between the Government and the council. The 11.5-hectare site was previously empty land owned by the NZ Transport Agency. Fletcher Living was selected as the Government’s private sector partner to develop housing on the site in October 2014 following a competitive procurement process.

Progress is also continuing at the other two developments under the Housing Accord – Welles Street and Colombo Street in the inner-city – with construction now well underway at both sites. The combination of the housing developments at Awatea and Welles and Colombo Streets, and the Government’s 600-home initiative at Riccarton Racecourse will deliver a total of more than 1000 new houses for Christchurch.

“The completion of these projects in the pipeline means that Christchurch will soon have the safest and warmest stock of private, state and community housing in the country. This is a testament to the collaborative efforts made by central and local government, together with the private sector. I commend Fletcher Living for the pace at which they have delivered these new, modern homes today, and I look forward to opening more houses as they are completed,” Dr Smith concluded

New Christchurch homes ready for sale in Awatea Green

Building and Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith officially opened Awatea Green - Christchurch’s newest neighbourhood planned, designed and built by Fletcher Living.

Located on Awatea Road, just 10 minutes from the CBD, Awatea Green will have a total of 238 homes when completed in 2018. The development includes two, three and four bedroom standalone homes and three bedroom terrace homes as well as shared green spaces, a playground, walkways and a cycleway to the city.

Fletcher Building Residential and Land Development Chief Executive, Steve Evans says the contemporary homes in Awatea Green will appeal to a wide range of people including those starting out, families with growing children and empty nesters.

“With Awatea Green we wanted to help create a sense of community so in addition to providing high quality homes that come with a 10 year Master Build guarantee we have provided other facilities including green spaces and a playground. It is all about lifestyle, creating connected communities and convenient easy living.”

Awatea Green is well connected to schools, medical centre as well as shopping, supermarket, eating, entertainment and sporting facilities. Completed home and land packages for Affordable Homes start from $350,000 for buyers pre-approved with a Welcome Home Loan. Open market standalone homes start from $450,000.

Fletcher Living believes in making home ownership accessible to everyone by making quality homes available for people at different stages in the home buying journey. People interested in buying a home in Awatea Green will be able to view the showhome from Saturday 19 March. Located at 2 McCrorie Road, it will be open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4pm. Rather than selling off plans, Fletcher Living sells completed homes so people can walk through the showhome and see the quality, the finish and the style of the home they are buying before they purchase.
