An opportunity to be a part of Christchurch’s regeneration is the motivation behind architecture and engineering firm Marchese Partners establishing itself in the South Island.

The Christchurch office of the Australian-based, international firm is the second in New Zealand, with its successful Auckland operation launching back in early 2015.

Christchurch local Simon Johnson will return home to head up the new office, after spending six years with Marchese Partners in Brisbane where he developed extensive experience in multi-residential, mixed use, education, seniors living and aged care sectors.

The rebuilding task in Christchurch is a mammoth one, but one which Marchese Partners Chairman and Founder Eugene Marchese believes his firm is more than capable of making a positive contribution to.

While Marchese Partners is an all-encompassing firm that delivers integrated design services including architecture, structure and civil engineering, building services and interior design across a number of sectors, its focus is to deliver pioneering and innovative mixed-use projects across New Zealand.

Mr Marchese believes retirement living and seniors care will become an integral component of all cities and their urban fabric.

“As a firm as we have experience that touches many corners of the globe among different markets and we are seeing the same trend no matter where we are working,” Mr Marchese said.

“The current retiring generation is refusing to give up the lifestyle they worked so hard to create and is simply turning their noses up at the seniors living stock they have to choose from.

“So instead of resenting these decisions, we’ve taken on the challenge as a firm to create mixed use living spaces this generation wants to live in.”

Incoming Principal Simon Johnson said Christchurch offered plenty of opportunity for these developments.

“The availability of flat land and renewed market confidence presents both urban and large masterplanned seniors living and aged care development opportunities across Christchurch,” Mr Johnson said.

“And the demand certainly exists, particularly with the recent increase in population post-earthquake and the expanding satellite communities within the greater Christchurch area.”

But Marchese Partners’ desire to become involved in rebuilding this community is just one part of the equation.  The success its Auckland office is having in that market over the last two years will put Simon and his team in good stead.

“Blair Keenan, the Auckland Principal, and I will have a close working relationship to ensure the people of New Zealand are presented with the best possible seniors living options,” Mr Johnson said.

“I feel a great sense of pride in the city and a chance to be part of the rebuild was a significant motivating factor in my return home.”

Some of Marchese’s important projects in Auckland include the commercial officer tower refurbishment and retail project at 125 Queen Street, remediation and refurbishment works at the Auckland Marine Rescue Centre, and working with The Selwyn Foundation on its Dementia Garden Design.
