Insurers settle $18 billion Canterbury claims

The Insurance Council of New Zealand announced today that private insurers have paid out over $18 billion to settle commercial and residential claims since the Canterbury earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, of which over $8.6 billion was for domestic claims.

Consumers waiting on insurance company responses to the Christchurch earthquake rebuild now have a baseline set of measurements to see how they are progressing, courtesy of InsuranceWatch.org.nz. Insurance companies can also see how they are measuring up – some are clearly doing significantly better than others already.

InsuranceWatch.org.nz is being coordinated by many volunteers, including:

  • David Stringer comes from a corporate background in pharmaceuticals, speciality chemicals and medical devices. He is a current school BoT member, Chair of Ferrymead-Brookhaven Residents Association and member of the Coastal Hills Cluster commitee, which covers residents associations from Ferrymead to Sumner.
  • Greg Young is a Licensed Building Practitioner with a Design 2 license, and is the Vice Chair of Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ) Canterbury Westland Region.
  • Linda Rutland is a community organiser and fundraiser currently working in Mt Pleasant as an Earthquake Recovery coordinator.
  • Peter Hyde is a web and software company director helping out with the Redcliffs Information Centre and other quake-related community initiatives.
  • Tony Aldridge is a statistician with experience in analysing and solving a wide range of industrial problems.
  • Vicki Hyde is the former chair and current media liaison for the NZ Skeptics, and an author, editor and science journalist involved in local community projects.
