The stone neo-Gothic Christchurch Cathedral was badly damaged in the 22nd February 2011 earthquake and to date, still stands in ruins, its future undecided. A Japanese architect by the name of Shigeru Ban designed a new building with an expected life span of approximately 50 years. This was opened in August 2013 and continues to draw crowds of tourists as well as worshippers.

Christchurch CBD reopened to the public at the end of June 2013. This was after being cordoned off to the public since the 6.3 magnitude earthquake in February 2011. A walk through Cathedral Square on the 24th July 2013 revealed massive gaps were buildings have fallen. Christchurch Cathedral still stands in ruins and ongoing demolitions continue in the area.

At 9:15pm on the 19 January 2013, Christchurch and Canterbury were shaken by a 4.6 aftershock that was centred near Rolleston. It was the largest shake the area has had in over six months. recorded the magnitude as 4.62 at 12 kilometres deep and it released 128 tonnes of energy.

The building was 14 storeys high and many of the buildings surrounding it had already been demolished. It was built in 1986 but  damage from the February 2011 earthquake meant it could not be saved.

The fall was spectacular and neat and even in the late afternoon, people were milling around, photographing the remains of yet another Christchurch building.

Following a few days of increased seismic activity, Christchurch experienced a 5.2 aftershock at 2:44pm on the 25 May 2012. It was centred in the sea between New Brighton and Sumner at a depth of 10 kilometres. The Mercalli scale registered it as VI meaning the following: Felt by everyone. Difficult to stand. After a relatively quiet period, Christchurch and Canterbury have experienced several fair-sized aftershocks in the last few days. According to the shakes were of the following magnitudes:

Tuesday May 15th, 1:27pm, 4.5 earthquake, 11 kilometres deep, 10 kilometres north-east of Chirstchurch
Sunday May 20th, 9:35am, 4.1 earthquake, 10 kilometres deep, 20 kilometres west of Christchurch
Sunday May 20th, 5:06pm, 4.8 earthquake, 8 kilometres deep, 20 kilometres east of Christchurch

reported a 4.5 aftershock in Christchurch on the 15th May 2012. The shake occurred at 1:27pm and was centred in the ocean near New Brighton. recorded the depth as 10.39 kilometres and it measured v on the Mercalli scale. This means the quake was felt by almost everyone, some people awakened. Small objects moved. trees and poles may shake.

On the 22nd February 2012, a memorial service was held in Hagley Park, Christchurch to pay tribute to those who died in the 6.3 earthquake a year earlier. It was a somber occasion marked with many tears and much heartache and sadness. Approximately 10,000 people attended and the service concluded with the release of 185 monarch butterflies - one for each life lost in the earthquake. On Wednesday 15th February 2012, I was part of a media tour around the red-zoned CBD of Christchurch. Following the devastating 6.3 earthquake on the 22nd February 2011, the city centre was shut down as authorities worked to secure the area and clear damaged buildings. This has proved to be a long, painful process and apart from a brief period when the public could access the city through Red Zone bus tours and a walkway into Cathedral Square, the city has remained off limits.

On Wednesday 15th February 2012, the media were invited on a red zone tour of the devastated CBD of Christchurch. This was in preparation for the first anniversary of the 6.3 22nd February earthquake that claimed 185 lives.
