Rebuild Activity Around the Central City Avon River

There is a lot of talk around Christchurch about the pace of the rebuild. The popular commentators in the media say that it is to slow. There could be some truth to this and there does needs to be a full and frank discussion about it. From the discussions I have had with investors over the previous months there is a definate slide in optimism especially for the smaller players who feelling the inflation pinch.

4 years on. The Christchurch Rebuild.

4 years on. The Christchurch Rebuild.

Thursday, 4 September 2014 5:51 p.m. by Swiggs Popular

A lot has happened in the 4 years since that first 7.1 earthquake shook us awake at 4:35am. The resulting earthquake sequence that lasted with severe aftershocks right through to January 2012 has changed the landscape in our city for ever. The worst of these shocks being February 22 where we must pay respect to the 185 lives that were lost on that day and the many tens of thousands of families who lost their homes, livelihoods and communities.

As we know the council is in a tight place financially about its cost share requirements for rebuilding the city infrastructure, anchor projects and community facilities. The exact number is in because Mr Brownlee thinks the council’s independent review has the numbers wrong, but it shouldn’t matter.

The Other Side To The Recovery

The Other Side To The Recovery

Recently I have been writing here, weekly, about current events and activities, such as new buildings, where insurers and authorities are at and the progress being made. At times this has been criticized for not discussing the issues people are facing, such as the housing shortage, insurance etc. Whilst these issues are of grave concern, there is also an appropriate time and place for discussions on these and to focus on solutions and outcomes.

Words words words. There are so many buzz words out around the circles of those charged with leading this city. Unfortunately there is still disconnect with those ‘in the know’ and those who aren’t with those who do not fit or conform slowly being side-lined and distracted. My fear is this causes questions of who to trust.

Monday, 10 February 2014 6:52 p.m. by Swiggs Popular

I was struggling to sleep the other night and was thinking about the Avon River Pricenct after speaking to Chris Lynch about it after the government started work on phase two. I then started to dream what I could do with the $110+ million it is going to eat away. So for a bit of something to do I have listed a couple of things that sort of dosh can buy. What would you buy? let us know below.

Street Art in Christchurch CBD December 2013

Street Art is taking over the central city where empty sections and bare walls dominate the landscape. It is so refreshing to see colour return to this great dark and at time depressing area. I had thought I signed off for the year but this stuff just has to be shared for those who cannot see it for themselves.

Who's On Our Side?

Today I am meh, not because of a lack in enthusiasm but for a confusion and frustration. The confusion comes from the perceived lack of compassion showed still by some of our civic leaders and the frustration is born from this and the absolute hard slog it is to get positive information out of people.

Our Central City

Our Central City

Monday, 18 November 2013 6:49 p.m. by Swiggs Popular

The Christchurch city centre is ever changing of recent times but nothing like the transformation that hits a person seeing the city for the first time since the earthquake that levelled parts of our beautiful city. Yesterday my mum saw the city centre for the first time in 4 years and her reaction was that of shock and upset at the empty space.
